Do your parents understand what you do?
Probably a silly question for many of you but I imagine some of you understand.
I’m the first person in my family to get more than a middle school education. It’s not against the law to drop out that early in my parents’ home country. So, they don’t quite understand what I do. They understand software in so far as they interact with it. But nothing beyond that tbh. Their ideas of professionals are architects, doctors, lawyers, etc.
Even when they grasp computer science or software development as a discipline it’s tough to describe my job - Software Engineer, Data Platform. I could say I do [what the company does] but that usually triggers conversations about what I don’t know - business side stuff or other stuff that doesn’t fall into SWE.
It never bothered me and won’t change my path, but I suppose a bit of me wants them to actually understand what I’m doing with my life haha.
Anyone have similar experiences?
