Sad day with new boots

Hey guys. I just received my order from Hondo (size 9D) which would be my first ever pair of cowboy boots….BUT as soon as I looked at them I was like “oh boy those look tiny”. Sure enough I couldn’t even get my foot past the instep. I’m not sure where I went wrong. I typically wear sneakers from size 9-10. I assumed that since there’s no laces I should go on the tighter end so they wouldn’t have bad heel slip. I wonder how much I should increase my size and potentially width (if possible). Brannock device says I’m in between a D and E width.
