can I make soup without onions?

I hate both the taste and texture of onions. my mum has told me that you can't make a soup like lentil soup, bean soup or chickpea soup without adding them, because it will just taste bad. I don't know anything about cooking so I thought I'd ask someone with more experience if I can do that without ruining the whole batch.

edit: I don't mean green onions, by the way. I'm fine with those haha
