Understanding the “pee on it” approach
Not new to composting but new to this sub. When I get a pile started usually just add greens, browns, water and cover with some dirt. Rotate it a couple of times and it’s ready by the next season.
Some of the posts here have folks turning a fresh pile over in a month or two by peeing on it. I can’t do that as the neighbor has kids and a camera pointed towards my pile and I’m not a fan of being on any kind of a list.
It seems that folks are peeing on it as a source of ammonia to provide ample food for nitrifying bacteria (nitrogen cycle).
We have the same concept in reef keeping. When you start a new tank you typically dose it with reagent grade ammonia chloride and seed bacteria to cycle the tank (get the nitrogen cycle started) so it can process fish waste - otherwise ammonia levels explode, fish gills get burnt from it and they die.
If pee is used the same way - as a food source for terrestrial nitrifying bacteria - could I just use a high purity source of ammonia added to my water when I go to turn my pile?
EDIT: This really isn’t about pee collection, but more about ammonia sources at scale. My pile depending on time of year is in between 1.5 - 3 cubic yards
