Should I tell my professors?
I recently found out that a close family friend has two weeks to live (she has cancer). I can’t go and see her because chemo has decimated her immune system and also because of the current covid-19 outbreak. I’m in shock right now and don’t know what to do. This lady basically raised my dad and I’ve known her my whole life. Right now I’m trying to distract myself with school work and work through it because she’s always been a huge supporter of my education (she wouldn’t want me to fall behind because of this). Mentally, however, I’m at a loss. I know I have to face my grief at some point rather than bury it. Should I let my professors know what’s going on? I don’t want them to think I’m making excuses because I’m still trying to stay on top of everything.
Edit: Thank you, everyone, for your support. Seriously. This has been a very difficult day for me but I know I’ll get through it. Following your guys’ advice, I’m going to email my professors and use the counseling services that are now available online for my school.
