Your Top 15 Favorite Symphonies?
What are your top 15 symphonies? 15 because 10 is too little, and 20 is too much:
- Brahms 3 (favorite recording: Abbado/Berlin)
- Elgar 1 (Solti/London)
- Sibelius 4 (Segerstam/Helsinki)
- Mahler 7 (MTT/London)
- Bruckner 4 (Bohm/Vienna)
- Mendelssohn 3 (Solti/London)
- Mahler 8 (Wit/Warsaw)
- Shostakovich 11 (Jansons/Philadelphia)
- Mahler 6 (Abbado/Berlin)
- Gorecki 3 (Yuasa/Adelaide)
- Rachmaninoff 1 (Ashkenazy/Royal Concertgebouw)
- Brahms 1 (Ozawa/Boston)
- Mahler 9 (von Karajan/Berlin)
- Tchaikovsky 6 (Munch/Boston)
- Beethoven 7 (Bernstein/New York)
I realized in making this list, I like sad, bleak, and tragic. LOL. I also noticed that my "top 10" are not usual top 10 symphony rankings (i.e. Beethoven 9, Mahler 2, etc.). Regardless, I enjoy being the tragic black sheep of classical music ;)
