Why are there so few blood banks in Chicago?

I used to donate platelets pretty regularly, but haven't really donated since moving here, and I wanted to get back into it. Looking on Google maps, there doesn't seem to be a blood bank near me (Logan Square) except maybe the Vitalant on Fullerton. It struck me as odd that there aren't more blood banks spread out throughout the city. Also, do people tend to have better experiences with Vitalant or Red Cross?

Also for platelet donors out there, anyone know if Vitalant and Red Cross use apheresis machines with 2 needles (one in each arm) or 1 needle? I'd prefer a machine that uses the same return/draw needle so I have a free hand to use my phone. Thanks!
