Newer to chess. Is FIDE really that bad?

I guess I was wondering in light of the whole Magnus jeans debacle why people dislike FIDE so much (I’m relatively new so I‘m not extremely aware). Objectively there needs to be a ruling body - is it just how unresponsive they are to change and criticism?

From what I’ve seen it seems like a lot of it is because of the classical format, and some of it is the desire for more freestyle and rapid/blitz. Some people also don’t like arbiters maybe. But these seem don’t seem like reasons to go full combative like Magnus has.

Are there other reasons?

I feel like in terms of the jeans thing, rules are rules, and while it’s a bit outdated it still applies (although a bit harsh). Magnus wasn’t having a great tournament anyway.
