WD40 residue removal - best chemicals?

Chemical product used... Sonax MO S 2 Oil This spray contains: Hydrocarbons, C11-C14, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, < 2% aromatics Butane, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol, White mineral oil, petroleum
Purpose, previous - remove bubble gum Material: synthetic fabric Object: messenger bag Result: success, but not only slightly deteriorated material, it also now smells horrible. It worked very well, but bag now stinks to high heaven, like some toxic insecticide - worse than real WD40.

I soaked, sudsed and rinsed eight times. I am now soaking it in 5% acetic avid (vineagar) mixed with double the amount of water for six hours. If that doesn't work, I'll get a kettle for HOT water, add a better decreasing soap and try again. The local laundsresses refuse to take it on as a task, probably because they don't want their washtubs to smell horrible from any residue.

Is there a simpler, faster or more effective method to remove this persistent chemical smell?
