the barbie method: my extreme method of keeping my bag pristine in storage
disclaimer: I am aware this is very fussy, not practical, and very extreme. I am also aware that this just might work. By no means do I do this with every bag I own. I am also not an expert and have no data that this works in the long term
After getting this bag in June, I was so infatuated, so in love with it that I began obsessing over how to keep it pristine. I’ve reviewed almost every storage method on the internet, but the all seemed to come with some trade off in terms of wear: - tucking the chain in causes rubbing and indentation to the inner flap and sides, also potentially deforming the sides if too much pressure is applied - wrapping the chain on top looks neat and protects the chain, but all the chain’s weight now lies on the top portion of the bag, resulting in creasing to the bottom portion and loss of bag structure - hanging the bag frees the body of the bag from chain stress, but the tension force of the chain onto the outer flap causes a point - putting the bag in the vintage black dustbag may cause color transfer - putting the bag in the white modern dustbag may cause the bag to have a permanent “lean” to it from the weight of the chain. The dustbag also doesn’t allow the leather to breathe as much as keeping the bag out in the open would.
To avoid my responsibilities, I created this method, which I call the barbie method because it looks like the metal coil thing that fixes barbie dolls to its box. I combined the benefits of hanging the bag and wrapping it in one - I fixed the wrapped chain to the top of the box such that the chain does not weight down on the body of the bag, and the chain has adequate amount of slack where it meets the bag so that the bag’s flap does not form a point. I want to emphasize that this requires the chain to be fixed far enough to not lay on the bag, but close enough that it doesn’t tug on the bag’s flap too. I keep the box open so the leather can breathe around the bag.
To illustrate my idea, I added a diagram that fully explains the method (excuse my handwriting)
Theoretically, this should cause less damage to the bag as the chain isn’t allowed to weigh or apply tension forces to the bag as much as traditional methods allow. Should I do yearly updates for you guys?
