Waffles

I am having the damnedest time cooking waffles on the iron. Preheating, using vegetable oil or butter, seasoned properly, low or medium-low heat, different methods all result in sticking waffles or burnt waffles.

What am I missing? Hotter iron? Slathering butter/oil on? Abandoning the waffle iron altogether?
