I bought a 2021 model y direct from Tesla and they had it sitting in the lot with a bad battery when I went to complete the purchase and take delivery of the car

Hey everyone. So today was delivery day on a used 2021 model y dual motor that I bought direct from Tesla. First time buying an EV. Got it to replace my Toyota Mirai that was totaled when a semi truck rear ended it.

For those not familiar, Tesla has a “special” process for buying used cars from them. They don’t supply pictures or even allow test drives. First time you see the car is delivery day and you go inside to handle paperwork. I figured well if there’s any damage outside of wear and tear, I’ll get them to fix it and I’m buying what is the equivalent of a Tesla CPO to have the piece of mind of their added warranty’s. Plus the car only has 39k miles. I show up for my appointment and see the car. It’s clean. Only a few minor dings and scratches with a clean interior when I looked through the windows(doors were locked) Basically what you’d expect for a 3 year old car with 39k miles so I proceed with the process

got all the financing done (supplied proof of payment from my credit union) and all the insurance and dmv stuff then we walk out to the car, I set up my phone key to find battery is at 71%. Thought to myself it was pretty stingy of them to not even fully charge it for me. I open the door and sit inside to start setting up seating position and other preferences only to find multiple battery errors listed on the screen(bms_a079 and bms_a066) going back to well before my delivery time

I walked back inside and told someone. They took the car back into service then maybe 30 or so minutes later brought it back and said they can’t deliver the car and will need to reschedule.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that any real used vehicle inspection like Tesla claims to do would have missed a failed battery, and on top of that no one who was prepping the car for delivery saw the warnings on the screen to be able to call me and postpone delivery

What this really seems like is they knew the car’s battery was defective and wanted it sold before doing a warranty replacement on the battery

I ended up waiting another hour and a half to get a loaner while being told “we normally don’t give one in this situation” which I found absurd considering payment was made and dmv papers signed and now it is a warranty/service issue.

I was later called by someone who told me the error first came up yesterday afternoon after it was washed for delivery but no one saw them because the message gets covered when the door is open or something to that effect. That was an insulting explanation to be honest. I then asked if I could get a copy of all service and error records of the car and was told that can be supplied when I take delivery of the car.

Has anyone else had or heard of a similar experience?

I purposely bought direct from Tesla so that I would know there was standing warranty on the car and presumably they at least run a diagnostic on it before clearing it for sale. Didn’t expect the car to be dead on arrival.

Honestly I’m more upset that they thought I’m stupid enough to believe that no one knew about the error and I had to waste a few hours of my time. If I had been called and told it needs a new battery and will be ready in another week, cool new battery at no extra cost.
