Bristol's nineties trip hop scene feels similar to Seattle's nineties grunge scene

I feel like Bristol is a bit like the Seattle nineties music scene. And I'm sure Seattle influenced the musical direction of Bristol at the time.

Massive Attack, Portishead, Banksy.

Is it grunge per se? No. But it's arguably grunge-adjacent — rather, it's trip hop.

I feel like (to some extent) Bristol is to the UK what Seattle was culturally to the USA. A hotbed for the gothic, edgy, psychedelic, atmospheric, and alternative.

Rolling Stone praised Portishead's music as "Gothic hip-hop".

Massive Attack's Mezzanine is described as conveying moods of "dark claustrophobia" and melancholy.

Seattle's scene produced more bands to carry the area's reputation, but I still think Bristol's scene has created its own identity.
