Why people don't like bridge. An analysis
I read this and felt that the author didn't bother to ever ASK anyone why they don't like bridge.
Because it is WORK. I play games to have FUN, to ESCAPE from frustration and boredom and work.
Bridge is like algebra homework in eighth grade. If you were not forced, you'd never do it.
Don't get me wrong, plenty of other types of games are too much like work. Computer wargames such as Panzer Corps 2, for example, are not really about combat, they are a puzzle. Do the exactly precisely correct thing at exactly precisely the right time, or you lose....even if you don't lose, a tiny mistake will snowball eventually into failure.
I know that there are masochists who love frustration and boredom, but most people don't. Life, for many of us, is a misery of disappointment and failure already. We don't want that in a game.
A genuinely great game allows MULTIPLE paths to victory, not a single restrictive one.
