Björk, AI, Rosalia, Oral.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been a Björk fan for the longest time. However, I have been listening to her generally for over a year or two (can’t really decipher the right time). I remember when I saw that she released Oral and I didn’t listen. I don’t really listen to certain releases sometimes by artists, especially when I’m not too deep into their discography yet (which at the time of release, I wasn’t), so I chose to skip Oral. I do remember it being in her top 5 most popular songs on Spotify though, so I did find that intriguing. I’ve really grown to love her over the past 6 months, having immersed myself in her whole discography by June. Recently, I decided to watch the music video for Oral since I saw it pop up in my recommended and yk What the hell, sure. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite music videos of hers, genuinely. Everything about it is really fantastic, maybe with the exception of the frozen scene of them in the white just speaking oddly. I listened to the song before this and just didn’t really find it insanely notable, but the video’t gave me a whole new appreciation for it. Especially with her intent being to give it all to an amazingly good cause for the greater good that she’s super passionate about, and I applaud her and Rosalia immensely for that. I do have to say I was quite disappointed, not quite revolted, when I learned that the video was AI-generated, or rather that they were. For those unaware, Björk and Rosalia are not the real ones performing in the video, but their faces were attached using an AI deepfake, which takes someone’s face and puts it onto a video in motion. Looking back at it, it makes a lot of sense; this is likely why the white scene is so eerie and why Björk at her age was able to do that whole damn fighting routine and look flawless while doing it. But this really doesn’t sit right with me. I’m glad it’s for a good cause and everything of course and I’m happy of its sheer existence in the world. But I hear no discussion on this at all. Especially in light of people attacking someone like Chappell Roan for merely “encouraging the use of AI-generated art,” this feels like a double standard. I know at this point Chappell is a much more larger, widespread influence who shouldn’t be promoting AI either, but it really doesn’t feel right that AI is being used in any artistic capacity, especially by someone as creative and inspired as Björk who’s capable of something much more than that. I’m not even saying she should be criticized necessarily, but it’s weird how it’s so not-discussed. Anyways, thoughts? Let me know how you guys feel about this too
