Environmental law at an Am Law 100 firm

Hey y’all, I have an opportunity to interview at an Am Law 100 firm in its environmental practice group. The position is for compliance work and counseling clients on enforcement proceedings and the environmental aspects of corporate transactions. Currently, I’m an environmental litigation attorney for a state AG with about two years of experience.

Can anyone provide some insight on what the day to day is like in environmental compliance and the transactional side of environmental law? Is it as demanding as other transactional practices?

I’m hesitant to pursue the opportunity because I really enjoy the work I do now. I have a lot of control over my cases and have great work life balance. I’m usually out by 5:30, rarely work on weekends, and have a lot of state and federal holidays off. The only cons are the pay is low, getting promotions and raises are very infrequent, and the office can be a bit political at times.

The increase in salary is tempting, but I’m afraid I’ll hate my life (with how busy I’ll be) or get in way over my head. I feel like I’d only want to work there for a few years and either try to go in-house or back to government.
