Suggestions for Backpacking Trip From Midwest

Hey!

Me and my buddies are trying to go backpacking for a 4 day trip, staying 3 nights. We are located just outside Chicago, and we’re planning to make this trip happen on Labor Day weekend leaving on the early hours (like 3AM) on the Friday prior. Are there any national parks that we could travel to from Chicago that would be reasonable to balance the travel time/actual time spent at destination? We’re looking for;

  • Some elevation and aspects of the western mountains, but obviously know we can’t make the trip to somewhere like Montana.

  • A large enough loop or out&back that would sustain us for 4 days, as we are all very in shape and looking to hike as much as possible so we would love the extra room.

We’ve been looking at Superior National Forest but have been put off by it as it seems that it would be a bit underwhelming and having trouble finding a loop that would sustain us for 4 days is unlikely just based off of what I’ve looked at, if you guys do know of large trails in that area do let me know.

Thanks!
