Why Boycott Mcdonalds? (genuine question)
Hey guys, as i understand it, we're supposed to be boycotting Mcdonalds. I don't get it. I get the boycott of Disney, who has pledged to send millions of dollars of support to Israel, but Mcdonalds, no.
Mcdonalds Corporate has not signalled support for Israel in any way, or even put out a statement about the war, as far as I know. From what I saw, people are boycotting mcdonalds because Mcdonalds Israel was giving free meals to the IDF soldiers.
Since Mcdonalds is a franchise and they have no control over what the different franchises do if it doesn't involve the actual food preparation, why then would we boycott Mcdonalds as a whole when this wasn't a decision from the corporate headquarters, but an independent location in Israel?
Wouldn't it stand to reason that the people living in Israel are the only ones who could effectively boycott those specific franchise locations? I don't see why not buying fries in America, or say, releasing rats into New York Mcdonalds locations like those Free Palestine protestors apparently did, I don't see why this contributes to an effective boycott of the Mcdonalds that support the IDF.
Genuinely lost here about what the goal of this boycott is, is it just a symbolic show of support? Is it a way for people to feel like they have some control over what's happening in Gaza? Because I don't understand how not buying Mcdonalds meaningfully contributes to BDS. Mcdonalds doesn't support Israel, they haven't sent them money, as far as I know, this was a case of independent franchise locations giving free food, not the company as a whole showing support. So what's the point here of not buying big macs?
Am I missing an obvious answer? Is Mcdonalds corporate somehow able to pressure Mcdonalds Israel into retracting their support and apologizing? I don't think they can do that.
(I also thought to compare this to the Chick-fil-a situation, but in that case, it was the Chick-fil-a corporate who put out the anti-gay stuff, not any individual restaurant, which is why in that case it made sense to boycott chick-fil-a as a whole. It would be weird to do a country-wide boycott if a single specific chick-fil-a made anti gay remarks.)
Thoughts? Genuinely baffled. Am I missing something big here? Please don't make me stop eating fries.
