Will the university protect my anonymity?

There is a student at my university who has been relentlessly harassing me for over a year and has more recently threatened me. There are so many girls that he has done this to and to be honest, he makes my uni experience extremely uncomfortable especially as we are on the same course. I, and another girl, are the only ones willing to make statements but he has said before that he has a contact at the university and so I really don't want this to backfire on me. Am I making the right decision and will I be protected?

EDIT: Thank you so much for all the advice that’s been given to me - I really appreciate every single one. Just a few things to add:

• he has changed his number several times and has used different display names meaning that the proof (screenshots) I have may not be concrete which is why I’m scared the university / police will not take this seriously

• if he finds out I was the one who reported him - he will never let this go and this is exactly what I am so scared of (he knows where I live and which school I attend)
