Given that a sufficient mastery of logic and critical thinking skills is acknowledged as an essential component in the formation of sound and valid beliefs, why does Christian culture NOT regard the study and mastery of them as vital and essential to belief formation?
When one relies exclusively on their innate capacity for logic and critical thinking, they are typically unable to detect flaws in their own reasoning, because such flaws do not occur to such an individual as flaws. This is precisely the potential, and highly common, problem that occurs when one relies exclusively on (innate) logic and critical thinking. (Acquired) logic and critical thinking actually articulates and addresses flaws in logic and reasoning that have been SHOWN to be used- OVER AND OVER again- BY people who rely exclusively upon their (innate) L& CT skills.
For example, the following is a list of highly common logical fallacies (which exist and are commonly used because a person trusts their (innate) faculties for L &CT; Ad hominem, Hasty generalization: False dilemma: Appeal to authority: Bandwagon fallacy, Appeal to pity, Causal fallacy, Circular argument, Genetic fallacy, Loaded question fallacy, Post hoc fallacy, Slippery slope fallacy, Tu quoque. Someone who regards L & CT as acquired, however, learns about the above forms of fallacious logic, and, (assuming they’ve clearly learned them, considered them while formulating a conclusion, and applies them correctly), does not make the numerous erroneous conclusions that someone who relies on (innate) L & CT skills commonly makes. …So, from a very pragmatic, reasonable, and logical standpoint, with regard to a Christian wanting to form sound and valid reasons, arguments, conclusions, etc., in the formation of their various spiritual and religious beliefs (as opposed to flawed and incorrect ones), one would assume that Christians AND Christian culture itself would advocate for Christians to be MASTERS of both innate AND acquired L & CT skills, so as to correct any and all personal flaws in L & CT that they might unknowingly possess, to make sure that the various beliefs and arguments they have formed are as sound and valid as is humanly possible, AND that they are free from fallacious reasoning, which would undermine or even nullify such a Christian’s claim that their belief or argument is valid because their belief is derived from completely sound and valid logic and reasoning.
…Yet this is precisely NOT the case. Christian culture and Christians, overwhelmingly do NOT value and emphasize (acquired) L & CT, even though Christians and non-Christians alike generally agree, and can easily see, that a) logical fallacies are commonly committed, b) that such fallacies are typically committed by those who rely exclusively on their own (innate) L & CT skills, and c) are NOT typically committed by those who acknowledge, esteem, and implement (acquired) L & CT skills.
…Strangely, the obvious and arguably absolutely ESSENTIAL criteria of belief-formation in Christianity (that such beliefs and arguments for beliefs is NOT the result of flawed logic and flawed reasoning) that (acquired) L & CT clearly provides, is NOT strongly emphasized or endorsed in Christian culture, or by most Christians. …Why do you suppose that is?
