Any general tips/recommendations for getting started on purchasing your own tools?

I do a lot of my own car maintenance (basic stuff like oil changes, fluid replacements, brake jobs, etc). I work at a high school that has an auto shop class. Good friends with the teacher, so he let's me use the garage and his tools if I wanna do maintenance work. If he's not available, my dad has a sizeable tool collection and I can head there.

Wife and I are moving to a new city. No more auto shop, no more dad's garage. Looking into mechanic tool sets, jacks, jack stands, ramps, etc. Nothing crazy, just enough to handle basic car maintenance and home repairs. All I have currently is a basic 1/4 drive ratchet and sockets plus a few screwdrivers and wrenches (all husky).

Don't know if I'd trust a budget tool brand like husky for auto-work, so looking for general recommendations, things to avoid, quality brands, etc. Also trying to be budget conscious. Not trying to break the bank by buying all premium tools or something. Was gonna look into Lowes and Home Depot. There's not really a harbor freight near where I'm moving but I've never shopped there anyway. Any reputable online shops?

Not really looking into power tools just yet, but from my experience I know I'd go for Makita, Milwaukee, or Dewalt.

Any tips appreciated.
