How do people just know what font is being used?

Why do people have fonts memorized? How can someone just look a typed text and be like “oh nice use of Comic Sans nerd” or “I prefer Helvetica to Times New Roman” I am pretty well versed in computers. I’m a millennial so I grew up using word processors extensively through school and I just don’t get it.
