New insight on the series finale.
On my fourth rewatch, I noticed something new about the series finale. So the title -30- is even more fitting than I thought. Some of you know it signifies the ending of a written piece but also has some loose ties with the concept of infinity. And infinity travels forever in more than one direction.
The ending frames itself as a story that doesn’t really end even though it does for us. But when you really thing about it, the ending not only gives us hints about what happens after but also what happened before.
Look at Michael who becomes Omar. Omar is a character where we know very little about what made him, but we get to see exactly how Michael was made so he is basically a lens that lets us know more about Omar’s origins.
At the same time we don’t get to know how Marlo’s story ends but we got to see Stringer brought to his end by Omar and Mouzone. We know that Michael put a target on Marlo’s back so we now have some insight on how the events after the show might play out as well.
So if infinity is something that lets you see into eternity in two directions, The Wire manages to do that too.
