Elena’s character kinda sucks

Watching for the first time, currently on s2. I’m on the plot line where Elena wants to die in order to save all of her friends and family. My problem isn’t her wanting to sacrifice herself for save her loved ones, it’s how awful her character is written. She is literally going about life the same way she has been since the show started. She’s just casually like “I’m going to die, and I’m okay with that. Kiss me Stefan” lol. It’s like she’s not struggling with the fact that she’s probably going to die soon. I don’t hate her character, but I just feel like she’s poorly written, at least for this plot line.
