how to handle older teachers
Hi everyone, I (23/female) started teaching at a high school in September. In general, I had a great start to my teaching career and felt very welcomed at first. While I still feel pretty good about most of my colleagues, I recently noticed that there is actually quite a bit of dissatisfaction among my older colleagues in particular with the new, young teachers.
Although I try to ignore the fact that they don‘t really talk to us much, I feel a bit uneasy about some of them belittling us or giving unasked advice (in a conversation that is about something completely different). On top of that, I overheard two of my colleagues in the teacher‘s room this week talking not so nicely about individual new colleagues. One of them even wanted to talk about me when the other one noted that I was there as well. They then continued to talk about whether new teachers should preferably only teach in middle schools and not in high schools.
Don‘t get me wrong, I understand that I am indeed a new and rather inexperienced teacher (obviously!); however, this just doesn‘t really sit right with me. I don‘t really know whether to keep ignoring them since I don’t want to cause any more bad blood or say something about it.
Have you ever experienced anything similar as a new teacher? What would you do if you were in my situation?
