To leave or not to leave?
For context, I took a first grade LTS job straight out of student teaching in early November. The old teacher quit because this years class was “a lot” and well…
The week before break, I asked a child to sit in his chair 3 times and on the 4th, I took away dojo points for not listening. This child went around my desk and proceeded to smack me across the face. He left my room for the rest of the day but little did I know security or counseling didn’t bother to tell his parents or even the principal. This has been running through my head ever since and I truly don’t know what to do. I have had issues with him as well as other students and these issues are slowly escalating, even as I try to implement classroom management and behavioral procedures.
Then, over break, I visited my student teaching kiddos since their district goes back earlier than mine, and the assistant principal saw me and offered me a job as a teacher had informed her that day that she was leaving. I loved this school and miss it everyday.
I am at such a loss on how to respond to the offer because I don’t want to leave my current class since their original teacher had left them too and they are very much traumatized so to speak about it but I don’t know if it’s going to be sustainable for me, especially if the physicality keeps getting worse. I told the principal she almost woke up to an “I’m out” the day that it happened and she said she wouldn’t have blamed me 🙃
What would you do in my shoes?
