12th Grader: You Need To Hold My Hand
Grades for the quarter were finalized today and I failed a handful of my seniors because I either haven’t seen them since the first day of school or they refuse to do any work in favor of being on their phone.
One student who ended up with a 16% in my class came to me after grades had been submitted. He started off by saying that it’s my fault he failed my class. This student has chosen to watch YouTube videos and text the entire time he has been in my class (yes I have followed progressive discipline but my admin doesn’t want us taking phones). He then said that because I didn’t remind him that he needs to do work each class period he failed. I’m sorry? You’re 18 years old and weren’t aware that you had to do work each period? He does not have an IEP or 504 - no accommodations for task reminders or health condition. He stayed in my room - explaining why it’s my job to stand next to him and remind him to do his work (which by the way I give him more reminders than my resource class).
How can someone be 18 years old, have no accountability, and come at the teacher with the hand holding argument? Am I crazy for believing that a senior in high school should not need the same support as a kindergartner? Like you either do the work or you don’t. Time to learn responsibility.
He then tried to gaslight me by saying that he never goes on his phone and he always does work but he doesn’t turn it in because I “don’t remind him that it needs to be turned in”. He left my classroom cussing me out.
Wtf do I say or do in this situation
