Is it possible to compete without picking these things?

I play a fair bit and I've never been too interested in using machines, hive minds and mega corps. I've recently tried an early virtual build using unity buffs to get an insanely early switch to virtual then pivoting to tech, and it is so ridiculously easy to play compared to anything else I try, particularly alloy and tech-wise.

If both players are equally as good as each other, is it possible to effectively compete without being a machine, a mega crop or gestalt?

It feels like it isn't. Going back to not using those feels more fun but then it ends in me being miles behind.

I guess I would appreciate any opinions, suggestions and debate.
