Checked in two people on same reservation - one got A boarding, one C

My son (7) and I are on the same reservation, which means I am able to press one button and the system checks both of us in at the same time. I checked in at exactly 24 hours prior to departure and received A43, but he received C28. I am not A-list. That seems… odd? Not right? Any idea what might have caused this?
