How does one get good at modern Sonic?

I know practice makes perfect but I’m playing Generations, miss about 90% of the collectibles, rarely S rank any of the challenge stages, have no idea what to do with skill loadouts, and just generally feel a sense of overwhelm. I played Sonic 1-3 a lot back on Genesis and did beat Frontiers but I am just sort of overwhelmed by how to get better/get a better handle on things. Something about going this fast is very entertaining though.
