can someone become scottish?
i’ve been thinking about this for a while now and i wanted to see what other people thought.
i’ve been living in scotland for 10 years now, not doing anything fancy i just asked for a transfer from the chain store i was working at in the south of england to the store they have in glasgow, and then after a few years managed to jump to a better job in a different and much smaller town. i’ve always been the english one at my work and that’s how i tend to think of myself, along with using british for official things like forms.
almost a year ago i went to stay with a friend of mine in america and when she introduced me to people she would say i’m from britain which i didn’t disagree with, and then when people asked where exactly i was from because i have a weird mashup of an accent now, i would say scotland and from there had people assuming i’m scottish by birth and now amongst my american friends i’m known as the scottish one despite me telling them i’m not actually scottish, and i’m not sure how i feel about it. i feel like calling myself scottish when i can’t claim any heritage or anything feels inappropriate. i’ve seen some people on social media say you can never be scottish unless your parents are scottish etc. and i wouldn’t want to be y’know. offensive.
my parent is german and my other one is welsh and i ended up growing up in various places in uk due to different issues, so i’ve never really had any attachment to anywhere before. i like my life here a lot, i hated the south of england beyond compare and wanted to go as north as possible and i’m happy with my life now and hope to stay here as long as i can.
another person i know here is originally from denmark but has lived in scotland for 13 years and she calls herself scottish and has never thought twice about it. she has british citizenship herself now but she always specifies that shes scottish and doesnt really call herself british.
so i’m just kind of wondering and have been thinking about, can someone become scottish? or is being scottish an identity that you can only be if born and raised here, and some people like myself and other people who emigrate here, are brits/whatever nationals living in scotland only.
thoughts?
