Memphis/Milwaukee/St. Louis

If anyone has spent significant time in any or all of these cities, insight is greatly appreciated! I'm drawn to places that are a little under the radar, have some grit and character and are low cost of living. I've visited all of these places and feel like they have a similar vibe, but am more looking for insight on what it's like to live there. Things I might not be able to get a feel for in just a long weekend.
