HIV and now, HPV… any advice?
Hi everyone. It’s my (26M) first time posting ever. Last January, I tested positive for HIV. My CD4 count was basically nonexistent but I was able to start my ARV treatment by the last week of February. I thought everything was going to be fine, but last week, I felt bumps near my anus, and when I went to the dermatologist, he told me it was anal warts due to HPV. He recommended I get vaccinated and have the warts removed through electro-cauterization(?) which he does in his clinic. He also prescribed and gave me imiquimod to be applied on the warts 3x a week for 16 weeks while I wait to get them removed.
My problem is I have no money and no insurance, so getting them removed is likely off the table for me. I’ve been using imiquimod for a week now too, but there has been no improvement at all (it even looks like there have been new growths). I have little hope that this will clear up on its own since my immune system is still shot only having started ARVs quite recently. I am slowly losing hope and getting up in the morning is getting harder and harder each day. I guess I just feel disheartened that after finding out I had HIV, I’d have to deal with HPV too.
I don’t really know what I’m asking tbh. Maybe advice on how to deal with this? Whether the warts showing up is a normal experience of starting ARVs when you have HPV? Whether I should stick with the imiquimod or just find a way to get the warts removed? Really, any advice or feedback or suggestions would be great. I feel so alone in this.
