One the fence with surgery. Would love advice.
I am 31M and live a fairly active lifestyle - I have a desk job, but I play a lot of golf, lift weights 3-4 times per week, love to swim, do yoga, etc…
I have a SLAP tear in my left (non-dominant) shoulder that’s been confirmed by MRI.
I would honestly say I operate at like 85+% with the left shoulder. I can do pull-ups, deadlifts, shoulder press, and other exercises without sharp pain. I may get a little dull soreness the following days. Golf seems to flare it up the worst - in the midst of this past season, I had a lot of tenderness in the back of my left shoulder. The only PT test that really messes me up is the empty can test - otherwise, I have total ROM pain free today. I honestly rarely get intense sharp pain, mostly just a dull ache in the back of my shoulder if I try to do a bicep curl, or if a golf super hard for a long time.
I am on the schedule for a bicep tenodesis and potential SLAP repair for 2/13 - I am scheduled with an incredible surgeon. I am however getting nervous about it all.
How should I weigh the pros and cons of “needing” this surgery vs. avoiding surgical intervention and living with this as is? If I am getting by decently at 85%, do I just avoid the surgery? Could I risk being worse off afterwords? Or do I just pull the trigger and do the surgery, suffer for however many months in recovery and hopefully a year from now feel back to 100%.
Thanks all.
