Meeting IRL
This is a bit of a sensitive question and as I both a tutor and a student, so I have asked myself what I would do in the reverse situation but still can’t figure it out
I will be visiting the country of the language I am studying next week and of course talking excitingly about the trip with my tutor. Next and last lesson before the trip is tomorrow.
In one way it would feel rude not to suggest to meet and say hi for a drink or something (absolutely no lesson outside of Preply though)
But on the other hand it would feel like I would imply on either getting a free lesson or in any other way violating Preplys rules.
So I don’t know what to do without being either rude but on the other hand not making my teacher uncomfortable.
How would you guys handle this situation (feedback from both tutors and students welcome)
I am leaning towards not suggesting anything now tomorrow, but if the teacher suggests meeting up that would feel fine though (I mean it is always nice to meet the person IRL)
But then still maybe mentioning - not to be rude by not mentioning saying hi IRL but still not to make the situation uncomfortable for my teacher-
that once my course is over and I ve passed my exam (to be taken in that country- which makes it make even more sense) say something like
”yes looking forward to the trip - and then next time I’m over (when the course is over and I’ve passed the exam) I would be happy to celebrate it with inviting you for a drink as thanks” or something like that
Because then it wouldn’t put him at risk of being banned or questioned by Preply either as the ”business relationship” is officially ended.
Your thoughts fellow Preplyarians?
EDIT/Follow up: Just came back from the trip; mentioned my intinerary in the last lesson just saying if you you would like to meet up for a coffee or something let me know.
Got a reply - ON - the platform pretty much saying that yes it’s always nice to have a ”real face” to the student.
I Interpreted that as just to avoid misunderstandings with Preply it’s even better to make the arrangements (time place etc) in the Preply chat, which we did, had a coffee and a casual meet-up, no language course but some tips for what else to see and do in the town; and all good in the hood 👍
And before that I also scheduled new lessons on the platform on the same pace as before just to make sure Preply didn’t think we were going to go off platform for actual teaching.
And yes indeed it’s a much nicer teaching experience as well when you’ve actually met your tutor IRL as well 😊
So thanks for all the input
