Wax resist toxic?

Hey potters.

I recently joined a new studio and noticed that they don’t supply wax resist. No biggie, I bring my own. Anyway… as I was using it this weekend on the bums of some pots, one of the volunteer workers said that the studio doesn’t allow wax resist because of ‘the fumes’.

I wasn’t aware that wax resist creates fumes more dangerous than what’s being fired in the kilns anyway.

I pressed the volunteer who said they weren’t sure why exactly why they don’t allow it, but I just wanted to know and better understand how commonplace banning wax resist in a studio is as it is something I’ve never come across before, and if there is a non-toxic alternative anyone knows of as I really dislike cleaning the bottoms of my pieces with a sponge?
