Can’t get tubes off of the laundry shutoff valves
All advice is appreciated. We recently had to replace our washing machine, and when I was uninstalling the old machine, for the life of me I could not get the tubes off of the valves. Neither could the installer, or the plumber I called. WD40 didn't help.
I figured I may just use the old tubes then, but once I turned on the valves it started dripping slowly from the connection between the tube and the valve. My guess is these are about 8+ years old already, and even if they weren't worn out the constant (failed) attempts at removing them may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
Now I'm in a predicament. Plumber wants $400 to change out the outlet box with new valves. I'm thinking I have three options:
- Pay the plumber
- Cut the tubes to be able to try to unscrew the valves themselves and hopefully replace them
- Replace the box myself
Our piping is cpvc and I'm fairly handy, though it's usually woodworking and electrical stuff, not plumbing.
Is option 2 feasible? If not, is option 3 generally advisable or is this really "call a pro" territory?
From what I understand, it's:
Cut out the drywall going down like ~6 inches, cut the tubes/pipes going into the valve and the drain tube at the base of the box. Then remove the box, put in the new one, glue the drain, and then dry fit the tubes to the valves with new insers. Connect the inserts with a crimping tool to the valves and to the existing tubes/pipes with couplings and paste. Do I have that right?
