School is dragging their feet and its destroying my childs self-esteem!!!
Hey everyone, I'm reaching out for some advice and support. My 6-year-old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD/anxiety and is struggling at school and with feelings of sadness. Seeing her facing these challenges at such a young age breaks my heart. We have been working since Kindergarten in hopes of getting her on an IEP as she struggles immensely at school, and that has destroyed her self-esteem and confidence. She has recently been begging me not to go to school because "she doesn't know anything and always gets wrong answers". Recently, they sent home spelling words that she worked really hard on practicing. When she took the test, she got 1/8, but she could successfully spell all the words at home. I am feeling so frustrated with the school as they are providing her with interventions; however, since she is not on an IEP, if those services are needed somewhere else, then she is tossed to the side. She is a very quiet and shy kid who easily will fall through the cracks. I am trying so hard not to let that happen. However, her depression and not feeling like she is smart is breaking my mom heart. I hate that she is going through this and is absolutely at a loss for what to do next.
For reference: She is starting with a new counselor next week, as well as seeing a new doctor for medication (she takes Focalin XR; however, it makes her incredibly angry and irritable, and she can recognize that and hates it). We also have a referral in for a full Nero Psych Eval to hopefully provide enough evidence to her school that an IEP is crucial for this poor child's self-esteem and future.
If anyone has tips, resources, or personal experiences to share that might help us navigate this tough time, I'd greatly appreciate it. Whether it's strategies that worked for you, book recommendations, or just words of encouragement, I'm all ears. Thank you so much for your help! ❤️💪 #Parenting #ADHD #Support
