PS5 DualSense Controller Pain
TL;DR - The controller causes me pain, and I think it's because of the slight inward curvature on the bottom of the handles. I am going to try a skin for some padding, but would like to know if anyone with a similar problem has a solution.
---
I am having pain using the PS5 DualSense controller. I've been playing PlayStation since PS1. PS4 DualShock 4 controller is no problem for me, even when binge gaming. I fully appreciate that this is unique to me, and perhaps others with a similar anatomy.
I understand that most really love it, and, from a tech POV, the thing is amazing. It's crazy to me that I'm having such a dramatic experience with what is such a little variation between the two.
OK...details - I have several pain points:
- left hand finger pads (I dunno wtf to call it, it's like the balls of your feet area, but in my palm). This gets sore, like grip-of-death pressure or some shit.
- Both wrists. Feels like carpel tunnel.
- Forearms. Feels like tendonitis. I get a tingling sensation (it's hard to explain).
This is all after using the controller in Destiny 2 for even 30 minutes now, and flares up even after several days off. Problems subside if I use PS4 DualShock 4.
I believe that all these symptoms are caused by the same essential problem: the curve. The slight inward curvature on the bottom of the handles causes me to bend my hands outward, away from one another (wrist extension). This wasn't obvious to me at first. In fact, when holding it in a pseudo or pretend gaming position, everything feels fine. But as things get heated in the Crucible or in a Raid (lol Destiny), I quickly wind up in the position I described. Ultimately, I think this is my hand seeking for the analog sticks. The PS4 DualShock 4 had a straighter handle which nestled into my palm, so with the curve, my hand is wrapping along the bottom of the controller ever so slightly.
I am a classical violinist, so I have to be careful about this.
I am going to try a few skins I've found on Amazon to see if that ameliorates any of this. There is one that looks to have some extra padding right where the PS4 DualShock 4 would have just hard plastic. I will post back with results. Hopefully someone finds this useful, or has something useful to add.
