Question about the series as a new player

Hi, I’ve never played any Persona game, nor do I know absolutely anything about the series. My question is, as stupid as it may be, does it matter what order I play the games in? Do all of the Persona games involve the same cast/story? Or are they individual stories in different circumstances?
