Taro rejecting Amai...
Everyone imo is overreacting.
I genuinely thought with how people were describing Taros reactions, he was cursing her out, calling her dumb, or just saying something overly horrible to her. But like.. that's not at all even close to the case? With how things happened, it looks like Ayano was just preventing them from doing anything at all together. SPOILERS FOR WHAT THEY SAY BELOW.
On Monday,
Ayano puts rat poison in the dishes Amai serves for the bake sale in order to get everyone sick and discourage senpai from trying the food.
During lunch, Amai asks Taro why he isn't joining ("Senpai...aren't you going to visit the bake sale?"), and Taro simply says, and quoted, "...oh...Amai...I'm sorry, but...I'll pass..." Amai asks why, and he responds with "Well...no offense, but...I heard that a bunch of people who ate your food got sick..." Amai admits it's true, and Taro asks if she figured out the reason why. When she says no, Taro responds with "...then...I wouldn't really feel safe eating your food...I'm sorry..." and then he apologizes AGAIN to her after being reasonably cautious.
What's so bad about that interaction? He's being reasonably cautious about her food, and let her down pretty easy. But I can already hear people asking "what about the pink apron?" Well, let's talk about that.
On Tuesday,
Amai asks Taro if he knows how to cook. He tells her he doesn't know how, and Amai offers to help. He admits he doesn't want his clothes to be dirty from cooking, and after a few filler words, she says she'll make him a black apron to prevent making a big mess on his clothes. Ayano sews a pink apron and replaces the black apron Amai made with it to sabotage this interaction.
Without checking to make sure the apron is even still there, Amai gives the gift of the apron to Taro. Expecting a black apron and finding a pink one, he asks Amai "is this your idea of a joke?" Amai immediately starts to explain that it's not the one she made for him, and Taro rightfully asks where the right one is since she tells him she made a different one. Once Amai admits she doesn't know, Taro says "...yeah, I, uh...I don't really know what to say..." because, well, in his pov, Amai is being extremely weird and messy with her belongings. Amai promises she'll find the right apron, and asks him to forget the mix-up ever happened, which he agrees to do.
So... what's wrong with that, exactly? This is the one that I've seen many people talk about negatively. Saying "why would Taro say that" but he didn't even say anything. So with that out of the way, let's talk about one that's been ignored. The recipe sabotage.
On Wednesday,
Amai asks if Taro is ready to learn, and he confesses he's still scared to screw it up. Amai quickly reassures him, and explains she found an easy recipe that he can follow. Ayano must sabotage this recipe while Taro is distracted. After she sabotages it, Taro finishes the food and expresses disgust for it after tasting it (with no secret hatred towards Amai for the mistake)
During lunch, Amai asks Taro how it went, and Taro tells her it didn't go so well. When she asks what happened, he explains that he followed the recipe through and through and it ended up being a disaster. Amai takes the recipe from Taro, reads it, and tells him this is not the recipe she gave him. He's confused, and when she explains it more, he just says "...well...I don't know what to tell you. I guess I'll let you figure out this mystery on your own..."
It ends quite normally, with Taro not really sure what to do or say. Reasonably. Again, what is so overdramatic and unnecessary about that? (and the next day he's still open with her teaching him how to cook) But maybe you guys aren't being overdramatic with his reaction to something that isn't her fault. The picnic.
On Thursday,
Amai asks if Taro has ever been on a picnic. He tells her no, and she happily invites him to have a nice picnic with her. He expresses worry about bugs getting in the way, but she reassures him there are no bugs in the area since there's nothing to attract them. With that, Taro very happily agrees to a picnic during lunch. Ayano must take the sugar from Home Ec and spread it on the picnic blanket before then, sabotaging their date.
When lunch rolls around, both Amai and Taro are shocked to see all the flies and ants swarming their picnic area. Taro says "Uh, Amai...I thought you said we wouldn't have to worry about insects." Amai expresses there's no reason for them to be here, and Taro starts thinking about possibilities like a decaying animal corpse (like he's trying to excuse it for her). Amai immediately cuts him off because she's grossed out thinking about it and she wants to still eat her lunch, and they end up just leaving the area awkwardly (after Taro literally lets her down easy and even says they should eat indoors together instead).
People have been nitpicking it saying it wasn't her fault, and he obviously knows that. Clearly. What is so bad about that interaction? Anyway, this has been a very long post and rant. Good thing it's almost over. Because..
On Friday,
Amai and Taro talk about how food can be art, and she talks about her social media where she posts said art. Taro tells her he'll check it out when he's not busy (he needs to study for an exam), and they move on. Ayano sabotages this interaction by ruining the masterpiece Amai has created.
During lunch, Taro checks out Amais social media and sees the weird sprinkle shit Ayano made. Questioning it and seeing her follower count go down (while not actually personally bashing her), he just moves on awkwardly.
That's literally it. When is he rude? When is he walking all over her? I thought it would be something nightmarish. Drastic. Pure evil. But he's just normal. Completely normal.
I hated on him before, but he's just a normal guy. Reasonable reactions. He's average. So, I take back all my hatred for him. I do dislike him still, but not to the extent that I used to. What did he even do wrong, really?
