Outer Banks Camping- Is It Even Possible?

Everything I look up about camping at the Outer Banks just talks about how horrible it is because of the wind and the mosquitos. Is it possible to go? Any suggestions for when or where? I have the whole year free.

I'm really just hoping to go to Alligator River, so if you have any suggestions for camping near there but not OBX that's okay too.
