Why does social media have such an emotional impact on humans?

I feel as if social media can manipulate our emotions, or perhaps, its users. Why do people care so much if they’ve been left on read, or if the like-to-view ratio is blown out of proportion? I am definitely someone affected by this, but I don’t know why or how.
