Coolpix Naming Explained??? Help please! šŸ™šŸ»

So I did a stupid thingā€¦ I had an old heavy Nikon camera that I have used many times and just LOVEDā€¦ However I thought to buy recently and try to get myself a more point-and-shoot ā€œportableā€ oneā€¦ I came across the Slimmer options and stumbled upon the Coolpix Series (A, L, P, S etc.) and I am just TOTALLY lostā€¦ šŸ˜ All I wanted was a decent Nikon in a small rectangular point and shoot option with a zoom function and I am SO CONFUSEDā€¦ šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« Thereā€™s Coolpix A900 A950 A1000 and thereā€™s Coolpix S6000 S7000 S8000 as well as S9000 and others even within those number lines such as S8200 S8400 S8500 etcā€¦

Needless to say that I incorrectly thought each of the numbers meant which camera was newest (I was thinking it worked similar to how you have Windows 7,8,9,10 or how you have iPhone 5,6,7,8 etcā€¦ )

So I bought a Coolpix Series S model (I was debating between the A series and the S series for their small form factors and I ultimately bought a Coolpix S8000 thinking at the time I bought it that it was a recent modelā€¦ WRONGā€¦ According to Google it was released back in 2010!!!! And then Iā€™m trying to figure out what happened? And where did I go wrong?!?! So then I decide to look up Coolpix S7000 and SOMEHOW THAT actually came out in 2015?!?!?!! What the HECK is going on with Nikonā€™s Coolpix Seriesā€™s and Naming Systems?! OMG can somebody please help try to explain it to me?ā€¦

I feel like an idiot because I bought the Coolpix S8000 for $120 with NO REFUND and now I feel totally lost and like I made a huge mistake of a decisionā€¦ šŸ˜

Who can break down the Nikon naming System?ā€¦

I was REALLY interested in the portable Coolpix A1000 but canā€™t afford the price and need to keep my budget under $200 and ideally around $120. šŸ˜¢

HELP ME!!! šŸ˜ šŸ˜ šŸ˜
