Buy or Sell? Bengals should have drafted Penei Sewell in 2020
Edit: this was the 2021 draft, my mistake
In the 2021 draft, Bengals had the 5th overall pick. They opted to reunite Burrow with Ja’marr Chase over drafting Penei Sewell to anchor the line. Hard to argue the decision given the results, believe it was a mistake however for the following reasons:
O-line play across the league is at an all-time low. Go on any team’s sub and see what the fans are saying the team needs to improve this offseason. Line comes up everywhere.
My home team (Patriots) among many issues currently have the league’s worst line. With the 4th overall pick and more cap room than anyone, we have very limited options to address this adequately and none that carry minimal risk. Our path to improving at WR however is far clearer.
Bengals in this draft already had Tee Higgins coming off a strong 2nd round rookie season. They were also well aware their line was a major issue and prospects like Sewell are scarce. To this day this issue has not been sustainably fixed.
You pay Burrow 55 million a year, is he worth that salary if he needs a 38 million dollar WR to perform to his potential?
An extension for Sewell, a more valuable player IMO will be south of 30 million per season. That savings leaves you more flexibility to improve elsewhere, an extension for Chase seemingly ensures their path to high end line play is very narrow.
