Excessive glorification of pirates in the Star Wars Universe
I've just finished watching the last episode of Skeleton Crew, and this series so far has made me remember this issue in Star Wars media. Putting it in a loose, spoiler-free way, pirates are not good people. They will change sides at any time, have little to no loyalty, and their 'adventures of freedom' usually include stealing, murdering and all sorts of crimes and misdemeanors. To sum it up: NOT a role model, NOT something cool. A similar issue happens with bounty hunters: also regarded as people with style and purpose, owners of their own destiny, owners of free will and style in terms of fashion. But that one I can accept because they certainly do not randomly take out on people or constantly go around looking for excuses to shot their blasters and plunder. The other remarkable depiction of piracy in the Star Wars universe is in the animated series with Hondo Ohnaka, as much as his storyline is meant to bring humor or to provide connections between characters - but then, he's just one pirate out of maybe thousands. I would like to discuss with you people why there is a conscious creative choice to bring good light upon pirates in the Star Wars universe, even going as far as 'apologizing' them by giving the named pirates a tragic backstory or some sort of trauma that would make them redeemable (and Star Wars LOVES redemption). Thank you for reading.
