Bad weather/natural disasters make the setting emotionally charged
Maybe kind of weird and specific but a motif I’ve found I really enjoy is when there’s some weather or natural disaster looming in the background that makes it emotionally charged like a wildfire or a flood or maybe they’re snowed in or stormed in somewhere.
And I’d love if it wasn’t action packed or apocalyptic or thrilling but more of a melancholy or even cozy vibe to it. (Even if it’s missing the vibe, feel free to drop recs below)
Some of my fav examples being: {Fire Season by KD Casey} & {Heartbreak Honey by Tammy Subia} both have California wildfires slowly moving in on the characters houses.
{Waiting for the Flood by Alexis Hall} has a flood slowly creeping toward the main character’s house that builds a melancholy mood.
{Luke and Billy Finally Get a Clue by Cat Sebastian} the characters get trapped together during inclement weather after one disappeared for a month.
Just one scene of a book but the storm scene in {Where There’s a Will by Jessie Walker} iykyk
I prefer contemporary or historical, but I’m up for anything and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated :)
