What is Kerala tourism lacking?
It seems that Kerala has immense potential naturally, historically, culturally, and in terms of literature. However, what are we lacking in the tourism sector? Tourism contributes only a small percentage to Kerala’s GDP despite having such golden opportunities.
I see tourism booming in countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. We all share similar resources and attractions, but where have we failed to attract both domestic and international tourists
I am not referring to the party culture or beaches for leisure; instead, beaches can be utilized for activities like water sports and similar attractions.
By mentioning countries like Indonesia, where something as simple as a quad bike ride in a remote village attracts international tourists, or the small city of Malacca in Malaysia, which resembles places like Kochi or Kozhikode, I aim to highlight the untapped potential in our own region. When we compare, it becomes evident that we are not utilizing our resources effectively. Urban planning and city beautification also play a significant role in attracting tourists.
Tourism can be an additional source of income, significantly boosting the local economy. A good reputation in tourism benefits locals in various ways, as backpacking travelers and other visitors will appreciate and contribute to the local economy, just as we do when visiting foreign countries.
If there are challenges for international tourists to visit due to certain laws, why not target those already visiting northern India or nearby states like Tamil Nadu? Additionally, why doesn’t our tourism department promote the northern parts of our state more effectively?
Is there a rule that prevents us from promoting tourism while preserving and marketing our culture? Why can’t we showcase our cultural heritage alongside our natural beauty and resources?
What changes or areas should we focus on to make Kerala an iconic tourism destination that meets international standards?
