Individuation and evolution
Hi!
Jung (and many of his followers like Edinger, Hillman, etc.) famously claimed that a fundamental goal of the human psyche is individuation.
This process requires an immense amount of energy, effort, time, etc. and - at least from a cursory glance - doesn’t seem to positively influence one’s likelihood for reproduction.
Has anyone attempted to view the fundamental human need for individuation from the Darwinian standpoint of evolutionary fitness?
As in, does the pursuit of individuation in anyway positively affect fitness, and - if not - how did we evolve to have this impulse?
Would love to know any recommended authors/books that dive into this topic.
Thanks!
