Why did Salinger end up stabbing Jessica Jones?

So, I cannot stop wondering if there's a detail I'm missing or if it's just bad writing: I cannot stop wondering how on earth Salinger ended up in the situation where he felt he had to stab Jessica. So Salinger is blackmailed by Eric and decides to kill him, cool. But why on earth did he decide to try and kill Eric at Jessica's place? Isn't Salinger smart enough to do his homework before killing Eric? Why wouldn't he kill Eric at his apartment instead? Even though by this point Jessica Jones is famous and he would likely know who she is, I could forgive him for not realizing that it was Jessica Jones apartment- maybe he didn't get a good look at her while tailing Eric and maybe he didn't realize her business was called Alias Investigations- whatever. But that doesn't explain why he would so recklessly just tail him to some random chick's house to kill him, right? Like why?? Was he just cocky and though he could get away with the murder anywhere? Was he actually panicked by the blackmail? Or was it just bad writing?
